In 1862, when Claude Bulland heard of a large structure for sale in Fuissé, he had no money.
A peasant in Vergisson, he nevertheless was looking for a farm to manage and to house his family. As such, he walked to Fuissé, a neighboring village. The structure in question was in bad condition; however, it did have style. And, to boot, a nice 2.7 ha walled vineyard adjacent to this Château, known as de Fuissé, reputed to have belonged to the fiefdom of St. Amour. Charmed and drawn to this château, he solicited a bank for the necessary loan, a rarity in 1862.
If this purchase was a great opportunity, unfortunately subsequent times were complicated and difficult. In 1870, the Franco-Prussian War was a major hindrance (or obstacle) in the Domaine’s development (or growth). In 1872, another devastation in the form Phylloxera came to the region!
